6 Functions Your Trailer Trackers Must Have

Many of our customers make the smart decision to invest in trailer trackers. The return on investment is often well worth it. If you they save you from losing one trailer or end up maximizing the efficiency of all of your trailers, the value is undeniable.

While there are many types and brands of trailer trackers, there are certain functions and capabilities that your trailer trackers should have in order to get the most out of your investment. Whether you already have trailer trackers and need to evaluate your current devices or you are looking to purchase trailer trackers, the following points are important to keep in mind.

Durability and Longevity

Trailer trackers should be made of high-quality, durable materials. If your tracker is going to be attached to the exterior of the trailer, it should be weather-proof and shock-proof. If the device is battery-powered, the battery should be one that lasts 1-5 years, at least. If it is solar-powered or plugs in, ensure that the cables or solar panels are made of a heavy-duty material.

It is also important to check with the trailer tracker provider and make sure that the software is up-to-date and performs regular updates. Error codes should send alerts immediately if something goes wrong with the device. The last thing you need is a device that breaks repeatedly, giving you a headache and inaccurate data.

Reliable Data

Speaking of data, your trailer tracker device should be able to record data whether it has a cellular network connection or not to ensure that your GPS signal or device data is never lost.

Utilizing the trailer trackers data, you should be able to access important insights:

  • GPS Position
  • Group Mapping
  • Historical Route Replay
  • Street View
  • Geo-Fence Boundary Crossings
  • Speeding
  • Stopped Time Summary Detail
  • Low Battery Alerts

It’s also important to verify how your data is being stored. Trailer tracker data should have at least one year of storage capacity.

Visibility

The primary reason for a trailer tracker is to keep track of trailers and to know where they are at any given moment. Your software should include a dashboard that allows you to visually see all of your trailers and their statuses on a map.

Easy access to an overview of your assets is paramount in managing your fleet on a daily basis.

Alerts and Notifications

Depending on the type of trailer tracker you buy, you should be able to set up alerts and notifications for events or certain actions. With geofencing, you should be able to receive notifications if your trailer exits the perimeters you set.

Additionally, alerts may be triggered by speed limits, driving times, and harsh braking. Some trailer trackers also track trailer doors opening and closing and allow you to receive alerts when they are opened outside of specific times. If these features and alerts are important to you, find a retailer who offers them.

Security Features

First and foremost, your trailer tracker software should have a unique login access. Additionally, the trailer tracker should have a tamper-proof way to be secured to the trailer and should alert you if disconnected.

Geofencing can also be used as a security measure to alert you if your trailer leaves a specific area when unauthorized to do so. Some trailer trackers also have the ability to identify drivers by using Bluetooth technology.

Easy Installation & Maintenance

Whether you have a few trailers or a few thousand, easy installation and maintenance are going to be important considerations.

Before making a purchase, ask to see the trailer tracker instruction manual to review installation instructions, battery/power source information, hardware specs, and ongoing maintenance requirements. Knowing this information on the front-end will help you determine the long-term value your trailer tracker will provide.
